Fandom Promo 2023!

Welcome to the Fandom Promo post, everyone!

Here's where you get those eyes on your fandoms for sign-ups!

Share what makes your Yuletide fandoms the shiniest and why you love them. A big part of Yuletide is how small our fandoms can be, and this is a good way to make sure other people know what gems there are out there!

EDIT: WE HAVE A SPREADSHEET! Thanks to Jaclynhyde we now have a spreadsheet you can access HERE.

Here are some areas you can cover:

Useful tip (Not required, but helps people if they want to engage with your fandom!):

- It's best to make each fandom its own entry with its own title in the subject line! That makes it easier for people to find/see what you're promoting! Don't worry about 'spam', that is the entire point of this entry and you're using it exactly as intended.

Adventures of Tintin

[personal profile] mongoosegraham 2023-09-17 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Adventures of Tintin
Media: Comics, both the black/white and the colourised versions.

Approx length: There are 9* b/w comics (including the infamous "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" & "Tintin in the Congo") and 22 colour versions (including "Tintin in the Congo").

Where to find it: The comic bookset is sold on Amazon, but digital copies are also sold on the 'Adventures of Tintin' app, which is on both Android and iPhone. It's also in libraries and bookstores!

What is it, in summary?: It's about a journalist who always finds himself in a lot of danger because of all the shenanigans that happens as he investigates a new scoop. The main leads are: Tintin, the brave journalist, his dog Milou (Snowy in English), Captain Haddock, a sea captain he befriends, as well as Professor Calculus, a deaf scientist who comes up with a lot of strange inventions.

There is a pretty iconic meme that stemmed from one of the comic panels, that looks like this:

What do you love about it?:
There is a lovely found family that forms between Tintin, Haddock, and Calculus. Through all the trials and tribulations that the three + Snowy go through, they are constantly barely making it out with their lives. Even though this comic is quite dated, it is still very enjoyable today, and I would say this is a lovely read for both younger and older audiences. It has a fun sense of adventure, with humor, and a very charming cast. Tintin, Snowy, Haddock and Calculus are all very lovable in the own rights, and the supporting characters are also just as lovely.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Fanfic or fanart would be fine with me. I love the comics and the TV show, and I love the relationships between everyone in the cast. The found family trope is very strong in this comic series.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfill your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
This show is dated, so some of the jokes don't hit, especially in the first three albums, America, Congo, and Soviet. I would not recommend any of those. Alcoholism is a prevalent gag.

Title: Currently calling it Dragon Shield Valentine's Dragons 2019 and 2021-2023. Still waiting for a canonical fandom tag and/or opinion from the mod team for a finalized title.

Media: Series of images, meant to be used on tabletop game playmats and other merchandise.

Approx length: Four images.

Where to find it: 2019, 2021 (link is only to image), 2022, 2023, and this is a summary of the overarching storyline (not all the links work)

What is it, in summary?: It's the love story of two dragons, one black and the other white. They meet by the shores of a beautiful river and sparks fly! They go to a solstice festival together! They get engaged! They get married! They murder the shit out of every human they meet and eat the bodies!

What do you love about it?: I'm a sucker for "they're so awful, they make each other worse, they're a menace to everyone around them, but they love each other and they're so happy together". I also like the recreation of classic romantic tropes - this was Valentine's Day merchandise, after all - with the very literally violent subversion.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I'd love to see some fragments of their relationship that aren't shown in here - if the dragon courting process is supposed to last "longer than most humans live", we can't be looking at the whole thing. Alternately, further adventures of Black Dragon and White Dragon. What do they do for anniversaries? What are their children like?

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Not really. I think to understand the stuff I'm asking for, you'd need to go through the whole thing.

Re: Feeders Cinematic Universe

(Anonymous) 2023-09-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
If you only want the first two movies, I strongly suggest making your tag reflect that, so you don't get paired to someone who wants to write the third movie. It's absolutely acceptable to nom Feeders (Movies 1 & 2) for yuletide tagset purposes.

The Hermux Tantamoq Adventures

(Anonymous) 2023-09-17 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Title: The Hermux Tantamoq Adventures - Michael Hoeye

The individual books are: Time Stops For No Mouse, The Sands of Time, No Time Like Show Time, and Time To Smell The Roses

Media: Children's book series

Approx length: 4 books, all on the order of 250 pages or so

Where to find it: It should be reasonably easy to get hold of the first book - I think later books may be out of print and they're a bit harder to track down, though I've had good luck with finding them second-hand. Also, I think the first two have an audiobook, I'm not sure about the rest.

What is it, in summary?: Set in the rodent high society of Pinchester, Hermux Tantamoq, a watchmaker mouse turned amateur detective, finds himself solving mysteries and getting embroiled in adventures, trying to figure out how to confess his feelings for the dashing aviatrix and adventuress Linka Perflinger, and trying to navigate the world of fashion, art, and unscrupulous academia that he is surrounded in by his friends and neighbours.

What do you love about it?: I love Hermux being an everymouse in a quirky cast of weirdos - particularly his neighbour and nemesis, beauty mogul Tucka Mertslin, whose plotting and scheming and chain of spectacularly poor choices of romantic partner drive a lot of the plot. The slow-building romance between Hermux and Linka is very sweet, and based on a mutual respect and admiration. The setting is really great fun, with provocative art, outrageous fashion, and socially tense nights at the opera interspersed with jungle adventure, ancient tombs, Bond-esque villainy, and all the while Hermux just hoping for a peaceful afternoon fixing cuckoo clocks and eating doughnuts.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I'd probably be looking for case fic, worldbuilding, or some adventure with a sprinkle of romance.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: You can read the first book to meet all the characters I plan to nominate and get a good feel for the world and the kind of story Hoeye tells with it.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): They're children's books, so there isn't much to warn about beyond some pointed guns and fantastical peril. Relations between different animal species does mirror some real-life race relations, with mouse supremacy and frowned-upon interspecies relationships coming up in the second book in particular.

Violet Evergarden

[personal profile] jubjub 2023-09-17 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Violet Evergarden

Media: TV series, anime found on Netflix here.

Approx length: 13 episodes

Where to find it: Netflix here.

What is it, in summary?: It is a story that focuses on the beauty of letter-writing and the impacts a letter has on both the writer and recipient. A soldier who at teen age was trained to be a killing machine for the war, struggles with getting in touch with her emotions now that the war has ended. Having lost her primary purpose, she explores these emotions she struggles to understand through learning the art of writing letters as a Doll, which is a profession in the world where humans tell the Doll who and what they want written in a letter and have it sent out for them.

What do you love about it?: I love reading epistolary fiction, and the emphasis on letter-writing and its impacts really speaks to me as someone who still sends out snail mail to penpals over the world.

It has stunning graphics and is extremely pleasing to the eye to watch. The music score is also beautiful.

Furthermore, Violet Evergarden is a tragically beautiful story; a girl who had her childhood stripped away from her so young and became dehumanized into a war weapon, learning how to actually be a human again. She formed a close bond with her major in the war, whom she was separated from after their last battle, and is taken care of by one of the major's friends, where he helps her get gainful employment and readjust to a post-war society, but the readjustment is not easy for her, especially with not knowing where her closest ally ended up.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Fic or Art, the story ends at a good stopping point where you can continue the story to how you think the characters in the cast end up, or make up your own episodic journey of Violet learning more about her emotions and the world. I would also love art, since Violet Evergarden is stunning visually.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Although the series is very short and manageable as is, there is also a "summary episode" on Netflix that is only an hour or so long that splices the most essential parts of the canon for the first ten episodes into a condensed one. Then you only have to supplement with the last three episodes to get the gist of the main story.

Condensed recap here.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): gore, set after a war but flashbacks to war scenes.

What is it, in summary?: Basically a South Korean giant monster film featuring a Godzilla-esque kaiju named Yongary.

What do you love about it?: It's a giant monster movie!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Character studies, missing scenes, Icho getting some karma for being such a brat

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Goofy kaiju violence

Approx length: Each a little over an hour

Feeders 2: https://tubitv.com/movies/590185/feeders-2-slay-bells

What is it, in summary?: Horror comedies made on shoestring budgets with cheap looking puppet aliens, bad acting, terrible writing, but somehow I find them charming and enjoyable.

What do you love about it?: I first saw the movies via Rifftrax and through the laughs I came to love how the movie makers set out to earnestly make scary and fun little movies for whatever money they could scrape up. I actually came to like the main characters a lot.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Character studies, alternate endings, missing scenes.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Gore, but laughable gore.

Sex Therapy - Cathexis (Webcomic)

[personal profile] mixtapestar 2023-09-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Sex Therapy - Cathexis
Media: Webcomic
Approx length: 5 chapters
Where to find it: https://www.cathexis.world/sextherapy

What is it, in summary?: Our main character, Elliot Graham (pictured first), says he wants no attachments, but it's definitely a case of protesting too much. He meets Andreas (pictured second) at the coffee shop he frequents, and their first date challenges many of Elliot's preconceived notions about himself. The third chapter focuses on Haruto (pictured third), a lovely optimist who's never had a second date... until Elliot.

What do you love about it?: The art is gorgeous, and the sex positive vibe across all the characters is so delicious. If you're a fan of pining while fucking, this is the canon for you. Lots of smut-related tropes explored throughout the comic. The plot is set up well for a likely eventual OT3 with the three pictured characters, and I am so excited to see how it plays out - in fanworks and in canon! (There's also lots of juicy bonus content available on Patreon, if you enjoy the free webcomic!)

Andreas is a divorced coffee shop owner who came out late in life, but exudes confidence now that he's living more honestly. Haruto is young and vibrant and so very feeling in everything he does. And the connection between the two is Elliot, a man who can have chemistry with anyone, and who has chosen them, but has limits on how much stability he thinks he can give to a relationship. I'm so intrigued by all of them and their story is gorgeous!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Definitely all three mains, with all sorts of smutty and shippy requests. I'm open to a focus on one sub-pairing of the three as well, with the acknowledgement that the relationship is open, as it is in canon.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: The first three chapters develop the main characters enough to get started, but it's not too much more effort to read the next two and get more OT3 vibes. ;)

Also worth adding that the totally optional content from behind the paywall of the creator's Patreon is 1) amazing 2) includes fic 3) amazing and 4) is full of both MORE EMOTIONAL CONTENT and MORE NFSW SHENANIGANS simultaneously. 10/10 recommend if you have $5 to spend one month.

Something Dark and Holy Series

[personal profile] marenke 2023-09-17 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Something Dark and Holy Series, a trilogy composed by Wicked Saints, Ruthless Gods, and Blessed Monsters

Media: Books

Approx length: between 400 and 544 pages

Where to find it: Available on Amazon or another retailer, or your local library! Also available as audiobooks

What is it, in summary?:the series in set in fantasy!russia and fantasy!poland, two countries at war because of religious differences - fantasy!russia has a pantheon of gods and clerics, figures that are able to communicate and wield the gods' powers, while fantasy!poland has said "fuck this shit" and invented magic of their own, which upset the gods and caused war for the past few centuries. our protagonist is nadezhda "nadya" lapteva, the last of the clerics, able to commune with the entire pantheon, and who leads a mostly normal life in the monastery where she was abandoned at - until the prince of fantasy!poland comes knocking to kill her. nadya flees, and ends up meeting a mysterious soldier from fantasy!poland, alongside his two traveling companions.

What do you love about it?:I like the cast - they're a bunch of extremely competent people, who also happen to be a few of the biggest losers you've met. I also like the magical systems - both feel rounded and robust, and although they're not the main focus, you can still feel like they make sense. idk I just really like these books

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I'm requesting shippy content but I'd be genuinely down for Anything

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: just reading Wicked Saints would be good to get you writing!!

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):blood, self harm, heavy body horror in later books

Space Brothers

(Anonymous) 2023-09-17 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Space Brothers

Media: Anime & Manga

Approx length: 99-episode anime plus a movie, 403-chapter manga but for the purposes of Yuletide I'll probably just be nominating the anime

Where to find it: The anime is available on Crunchyroll. You can get the manga through Comixology I think - it's published by Kodansha but I don't think it's even available on their crappy app, and fan translations are patchy.

What is it, in summary?: Two brothers decide to become astronauts as children but come adulthood, the younger brother Hibito has actually become an astronaut while anxiety-ridden older brother Mutta languishes after being fired from a job in the automobile industry. But it's never too late to follow an old dream, and Mutta picks himself to follow in his younger brother's footsteps and become an astronaut.

What do you love about it?: This is a heart-warming and uplifting story that closely follows in well-researched detail the long process of being selected and trained as an astronaut and undertaking near-future space missions. But it's also a story about familial relationships, how different pairs of brothers or parents and children support and encourage each other, and about recovering from trauma and deep loss.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Something platonic that explores the relationship of the two main brothers, or some of their friends and mentors.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Not exactly. You can certainly watch just a couple of earlier arcs and set fic in those times, though be aware that childhood flashbacks are used as a storytelling device all the way through, so we're always learning more things about characters' backstories as we go along.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): The large international cast is hampered by some unfortunate racial and national stereotypes. I find it a bit awkward but not a deal-breaker as characters are developed over time, but YMMV

ROAR

(Anonymous) 2023-09-17 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Title: ROAR

Media: TV series, 1 episode (#6)

Approx length: 40 minutes

Where to find it: Apple TV, online

What is it, in summary?: It's about a girl who solves her own murder. She's a ghost who hasn't passed on, and with her interference, she helps an incompetent detective find the clues needed to solve the crime.

What do you love about it?: I love the premise of the show. A girl solving her own murder, able to touch things in the real world to help steer the detectives (who are insanely incompetent) in finding her killer. The detective duo have really great banter and are both bickering airheads, which adds a nice comedy to the show. The dialogue is really funny, and it is very cool to see the ghost solve the murder.

The lead detective, Bobby Bronson, is very charming and handsome, even though he's a massive airhead. But it's funny watching the shenanigans he gets himself into.

Image

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Anything! This show is a favourite of mine, and I'd be pleased with someone taking the chance and watching it and making something for me from it!

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: It's only one episode, #6, so it's pretty short and easy to get through.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): murder, crime scene photos, vulgar language

House Of Hollow - Krystal Sutherland (book)

[personal profile] jalu2 2023-09-17 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Title: House Of Hollow

Media: Book

Approx length: 300 pages

Where to find it: Amazon, your local bookstore, your local library

What is it, in summary?: Iris has spent most of her teenage years trying to avoid the weirdness that sticks to her like tar. But when her eldest sister, Grey, goes missing under suspicious circumstances, Iris learns just how weird her life can get: horned men start shadowing her, a corpse falls out of her sister’s ceiling, and ugly, impossible memories start to twist their way to the forefront of her mind. The closer Iris gets to the truth, the closer she comes to understanding that the answer is dark and dangerous – and that Grey has been keeping a terrible secret from her for years.

What do you love about it?: There is an overall spooky, creepy atmosphere to this entire book while also very much encompassing the 'coming of age' aspects of young adult fiction.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Worldbuilding! Creepy sisters! Canon queer characters! Most likely I'll be leaning heavily into the worldbuilding aspect, but the character's themselves are also great.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Not really. It's not a long read, so I'd say read it all. The last ~third of the novel will likely be the focus of my requests, though.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): As far as YA goes, this is pretty far in the spectrum of darkfic. I'm happy to give more content warnings to anyone who has specific squicks/triggers.

Growing Things - Paul Tremblay (short story)

[personal profile] jalu2 2023-09-17 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Growing Things

Media: Short story

Approx length: <50 pages

Where to find it: Part of Paul Tremblay's anthology Growing Things and Other Stories

What is it, in summary?: A father goes missing, leaving two sisters behind, all the while something continues to grow in there basement...then there's a knock at the door.

What do you love about it?: This story leaves so. many. questions. I want answers to a whole bunch of them. You could explore sibling dynamics, the dystopian setting, worldbuilding, or deep dive into the psyche of any of these characters.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Worldbuilding! Whether it's on a small scale of the house and what happens next or a greater look at the (potential) post-apoc setting.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: The titular story in the anthology is all that's required. It's also a 'spiritual prequel' to Tremblay's novel A Head Full of Ghosts; this is not required reading to understand the short.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Not much. It's horror but most is shown off-screen.

Where to find it:

What is it, in summary?: Screenshot mockups of a Windows 95 system that says creepy things to the user, made by Niel Cicierega

What do you love about it?: It's a fun bit of computer horror.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Oh, anything in the spirit of it, really. This could be a good one for anyone who wants to do interactive fics or other non-traditional fics, but a regular fic is great too.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: You can probably get the idea from just one of the posts, but it also doesn't take too long to get through all of it.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): There's some body horror, mentions of blood/needles, self-harm in some of the posts (not shown graphically).

The Attic - A. M. Burrage

[personal profile] sweetsorcery 2023-09-17 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Title: The Attic - A. M. Burrage

Media: Novella

Approx length: 38 print pages

Where to find it: Available as part of Burrage story collections and on its own in Kindle format.
(Contact me or check out my pinned 'Dear Writer' Letter for availability in audio format.)

What is it, in summary?: A 1924 ghost story. Burrage wrote ghost stories and boys' adventure stories; this is a classic mix of both.
The Attic starts out with a portrait of two apparently similar, somewhat superficial acquaintances with a shared past. Then we join one of them, Stanley Forbes, as he visits the other, Raymond Telford, for a holiday in the country at the latter's newly acquired creepy "mansion" (a former school). There, we soon learn that Stanley thinks about things rather more deeply, and is a great deal more sensitive to people's needs and the house's decidedly bad vibes, than Telford and his wife Gladys.
Soon after, Gladys' teenage brother arrives. Derek, despite being recently orphaned, is cheerful, well adjusted, intelligent and charming, and he and Stanley get along wonderfully. But, like Stanley, Derek is sensitive and soon feels that there's something very much amiss in the house and, after a frightening night time encounter, is driven to make his escape. He's made to return and, with emotional support from Stanley (who's meanwhile had a very similar encounter), manages to tell his tale and bring about a resolution to a crime in the house's past, but he's left shaken and, quite literally, haunted.

What do you love about it?: Many things, but most of all the bond formed between Stanley and Derek! Derek is made so vulnerable by his traumatic encounter, and no one but Stanley has the least idea how he feels or what he saw. Stanley is very protective of him. He gives him courage and takes him seriously, and Derek is so obviously strengthened by that loyalty. I'm just smitten with the idea of where they might go from there in future.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Stanley Forbes/Derek Wilson as a romantic pairing, ideally, or friendship fic at least

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: No, it's a self-contained short piece. In audio format, for example, it's less than 45 minutes long.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): The 'haunting' part of the story involves the mistreatment and murder of a young boy but, as is usual for stories from this era, there are no gory details.
Derek is 15 in the canon, but any request I'll make for a romantic pairing will ask for a post-canon setting if there's sexual content.

As the blurb says: Cecilia is an heiress, but she can only keep her fortune if her husband will consent to take her surname. (It is ultimately more complex than that!)
The book is set (and was written) around 1780. Cecilia loses her last relative shortly before coming of age. She has a small inheritance from her father, and a larger one that is tied to her keeping her name. A gentle, intelligent girl with a strong sense of fairness and propriety, she has to move from the countryside to London to live with one of her three assigned guardians until she comes of age. The start of the book focuses on the society she is learning to fit into, and drifts towards Money complications and Romance - and the Romance complications that ensue when her love interest has his own familial demands regarding his name.

The book is a known inspiration source for Pride and Prejudice - but note that there is no correspondence of character types. Cecilia is *not* Lizzie Bennet.

The book currently has zero fics on AO3.

What do you love about it?:
It's an early social satire with a sympathetic main character, and I especially loved that throughout the book, the complications tended to be caused by understandable reactions to a triggering problem.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Romance (not sex), what if/canon divergence, character studies, scenes from the perspective of someone other than Cecilia. I would pretty much want a sympathetic view of my requested characters unless explicitly stated otherwise - and would not want anyone villainized or bashed.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
I wish I could say there were easy ways to piecemeal this. A lot certainly can be skimmed (I am not interested in the nitty gritty details of the societal exchanges, some of which are lengthy, or the exact precise wording of conversations) and the interactions with the canon love interest don't start at all until chapter iii, book II in Part 1. Two other characters I am interested in could to a certain extent be word searched for to get a grasp of them, but Cecilia herself pervades pretty much the entire thing.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
There is a suicide (heard, not seen, and no gore), and one character has a temporary bout of feverish insanity.

Ooh, I read this a very long time ago and I loved it though I'm fuzzy on the details now. What characters other than Cecilia are you planning to nominate?

The Love Child by Edith Olivier

And yet—Agatha was tortured by jealousy. Till now, Clarissa had breathed, moved, and lived, only and entirely in sympathy with herself. She hated to lose a moment of her time, a word that she spoke. She wanted to keep everything.

And it was not only jealousy, but
fear, lest Clarissa should somehow slip away.

She might go out, like a shooting star.

Title: The Love Child by Edith Olivier

Media: novel

Approx length: 208 short pages in my copy

Where to find it: there are some recent reprints, so it may be at your favorite bookseller or library; also, it has entered the US public domain this year, and I’m currently working on digitizing it to share freely.

What is it, in summary?: A short novel from 1927 about Agatha Bodenham, a lonely, unfulfilled woman who, after the death of her mother, finds her childhood imaginary friend returning to her—and gradually becoming a real little girl, Clarissa. With Clarissa in her life, she has a second chance at many things that she’s missed—friendship, motherhood, and the imagination that was stunted by her upbringing. But is their companionship too perfect to last?

It is less sentimental and more slightly disturbing (on a very abstract, emotional level) than that makes it sound, but it’s the best I can do without spoilers.

What do you love about it?: It’s a very quiet book; even the fantastical element is just kind of slipped in, and I love that sort of genre ambiguity. Agatha is a wonderfully complex portrait of a seemingly unremarkable woman, with a lot of the story being about the hidden depths that are in everyone and the pain that’s caused when they’re not acknowledged. Beyond just Agatha, the entire story is intrinsically centered on female characters, very much as a matter of course, which I find very nice. I like the multiple thematic resonances—Agatha’s relationship with Clarissa represents the struggle of the artist with her material, but also motherhood as a potentially liberating and potentially stifling relationship, but also the intrinsic alienation and longing for connection in all human relationships… There’s also some cool meta implications—Olivier wrote the novel soon after her own mother’s death, and while Agatha is hardly an autobiographical character, I think it’s fascinating that there’s a level on which she’s just as “made up” as her imaginary friend Clarissa.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: All definitely gen: Pre-canon fic about Agatha’s original invention of Clarissa in her childhood; outsider POV, especially from the perspective of Agatha’s cook and housemaid, who seem to see a lot more than Agatha accounts for; anything playing with those meta implications. I’d also be delighted by art treats—there are some really visually lovely scenes in the novel, especially around Clarissa’s early appearances. (I also think it’s worth saying that I am not that interested in a straightforward post-canon fix-it.)

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Not really, but it’s a short book.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Nothing that I can think of, unless there’s some brief instance of “period-typical something” that I’m forgetting.

Title: Cowboy Bebop

Media: TV show on Netflix (sub and dub)

Approx length: 26 episodes

Where to find it: Netflix (sub and dub)

What is it, in summary?:
What do you love about it?:

Honestly a classic found family anime about five misfits who come from different walks of life that are able to come and find peace together in their little group. I love how each character develops their own relationship with the other four characters and how they have such differing but supportive, nourishing relationships with one another.

I truly believe Cowboy Bebop is an iconic show, known for a great ensemble cast, that can hit both adventurous and melancholic notes as the cast learns to heal from their past wounds.

It involves space bounty hunters, so it has a bit of a western vibe with a space element, which gives it a cool atmosphere.

The characters are definitely the star of the show, though. Each individual has a unique personality about them, and it is SO much fun watching them bicker like family. They all get under each other skin, but at the end of the day, they care about each other so much. There is a lot of lovely banter and shenanigans as these people all act unhinged and unpredictable, which makes Cowboy Bebop a very funny watch.

Furthermore, the graphics still hold up and aren't much of a deterrent to watching the show. I actually really love the aesthetic of the show. The music is also amazing, starting from the opening theme.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Any medium works for me! This is one of my favorite character crews, and I think often about what their journeys are like post-canon. I would love to consume any sort of work regarding the Bebop 5.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):

Title: Püha ja õudne lõhn | Sacred and Terrible Air - Robert Kurvitz

Media: novel ("prologue to a cycle of novels" that were never written but it's a standalone story)

Approx length: 230 pages

Where to find it: here's a fan translation. The current IP troubles have put an official edition on hold.

What is it, in summary?: the first long story published in the world of Elysium, of later Disco Elysium fame, introducing it right as it disappears. It's a story of the end times, of loss and yearning. At the end of summer, four young sisters disappear mysteriously. Twenty years later, three of their schoolmates still haven't given up on finding them, an obsession which has molded their lives in different ways. All around them the world is ending, but as long as they still have one lead to make that one thing right, to go back to that perfect golden summer of their youth... also featuring: mind-reading drugs! A wild taxi ride at the end of the world! Fantasy communism with very real leftist infighting! Not one but two brands of nihilism! Dialectical materialism! More loss and defeat than you can shake a stick at!
Compared to Disco Elysium, the novel is set 20 years later in faraway Katla and Graad, doesn't share a cast, and makes the weirder events of the game look positively restrained.

What do you love about it?: the grandiose tragedy of it all - in the words of one of the editors, "the shadow of annihilation waiting in the wings next to the unshakeable belief in the greatness of humankind." And the sheer magic of many scenes, especially in the latter half of the book.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: my heart lies in Samara... much as I love the protagonists and actual main plot, my nominations will mostly focus on the turn-of-the-century revolution cast. I'll be asking for entroponetic adventures with the world's worst and most opinionated imaginary frenemy, the limits of future vision in the face of annihilation, communist hand-holding and communist kissing with tongue, exile, exile, exile.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): much like their latter work Disco Elysium, this is very much a world that has vast amounts of all -isms in it and the narration sticks closely to it. One major character has groomed a 19yo since she was 15. A pedophile is also mentioned to be gay in a way that I found off compared to the other descriptions of terrible people being terrible. Nuclear world war and a fantasy environmental catastrophe are central to the plot even if they are described in rather muted tones, all things considered.

Book #5: https://archive.org/details/mennymsalive00waug_0

What is it, in summary?:
The series chronicles the fortunes of the Mennyms, an extended family of life-sized sentient ragdolls. They came to life following the death of their creator, an elderly spinster (and extremely proficient seamstress) called Kate Penshaw. For forty years, their existence has been routine and unchanging. It’s centred around a series of “pretends” (none of them can eat or drink, but they like to hold pretend meals; they never grow any older, but they celebrate the children’s birthdays every year). Their peace of mind and security depends upon their secret (i.e. the fact that they’re not really human) never being discovered, and they’ve contrived lots of elaborate ways to avoid detection. However, one morning, they receive a bombshell which throws their whole way of life under threat…

What do you love about it?:
The series echoes back to (and is written in the same spirit as) works by earlier children’s fantasy authors like E Nesbit and Mary Norton: it’s gentle, whimsical, and the fantastical elements coexist alongside a mundane/real world setting. But at the same time, it has a darker thread of existential horror running through it, which increases as the series goes on. (To give one example, the family has a ragdoll friend, Miss Quigley, who comes for tea once a fortnight. She pretends that she lives in a nearby street, but really she spends all her time sitting on a chair in the hall cupboard, deprived of any company or stimulation. It’s horrifying if you look too closely into it.) The books also contain some fascinating philosophical discussion of mortality and what it means to be human. They explore how it feels to be an outsider in society, on the edges of a world that you can’t be a part of and that would probably reject you, in a way that obviously has a far wider symbolic resonance. Overall, they’re the sort of children’s books that don’t lose their magic, depth or richness when you (re)read them as an adult!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Worldbuilding, with a side-serving of existential horror! The books don’t dig too deep into just how the Mennyms came to life, so I’d love backstory fic which explores that question. I’d also be interested in further explorations of their pretends and elaborate rituals of secrecy.

Aside from that, one of the highlights of the series for me is the relationships, squabbles and petty feuds between different members of the family, which are all rendered in a very realistic and intensely human way. I’d adore genfic (whether pre-, post- or during canon) about any of those relationships!

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
The first book in the series, The Mennyms, stands on its own quite well and gives a good grounding into the characters and worldbuilding, so I’d be more than fine with fic based on that part of canon alone.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
There’s quite a lot of discussion about death and grief, but other than that, nothing I can think of off the top of my head.

They See What We Do Not See by Otto Mäkilä

Media: Painting from 1939, https://www.ts.fi/static/content/pic_5_208910_k208911_1200.jpg (if this link doesn't work, tell me. It's not easy finding an official site that would show the image, since the museum doesn't have it in their gallery.)

What is it, in summary?: A painting by a Finnish surrealist Otto Mäkilä. Three people standing facing away, joined by a thread that looks like a tape measure, and their shadows that are doing Weird Things that have no relation to their positions. Also the name! What is it they see that we do not see? They could be standing on a ridge, all we see is blue sky behind them.

What do you love about it?: The name, and the implication that there's Something Going On. (Obviously my imagination goes to THREESOME! but yours may differ.) What is it they see? What is it they do, or have done, or would do if?

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Describe me what is it they're seeing, in words or art? What is it their shadows are telling us, literally behind their backs? What about the thread they're holding, or their respective colours, or their shadows?

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
None, or maybe, depending on your interpretation of the symbolism.

Title:13th CE RP: Onfim of Novgorod

(not title as such, but a real person I'd love to hear more about)

Media: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onfim Technically birchbark letters found in Novgorod, some of which were written (and drawn) by a little boy named Onfim. Some more analysis: https://lithub.com/onfim-wuz-here-on-the-unlikely-art-of-a-medieval-russian-boy/ and https://www.goldschp.net/SIG/onfim/onfim.html

Approx length: A Wiki article isn't that long and it has all the pertinent information, but the Internet is a rabbithole and there are several analyses of Onfim's letters and drawings.

Where to find it:
I have no idea if the originals are available anywhere, but Wikipedia has some images.

What is it, in summary?: Onfim was a six-or seven-years-old boy from 13th CE Novgorod, whom we know of his homework that was scribbled on birchbark. He also drew some wicked pictures of knights and people and monsters, just like any kid of that age.

What do you love about it?: People have always been people, and kids especially! Give them a surface to draw on and they will scribble stuff on it. (His teacher must have been infinitely patient, or else infinitely frustrated at times.)

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Anything you'd like to write! Tell me about Onfim's and his friend Danilo's day, maybe from their teacher's point of view, or their parents', or tell me what he dreamed of drawing those knights and monsters instead of doing his homework. Was he telling himself a story or a legend? What did he become when he grew up, or what he would think if he knew what happened to his childhood scribblings? Draw me another monster or knight, Onfim-style!

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Wikipedia has all the pertinent information, the rest is just analysis and speculation.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Ummm... violence as depicted by a child? Not very graphic, but it's there nevertheless.

The AirZone Solution? (1993)

Title: The AirZone Solution? (1993)

Media: Film

Approx length: An hour

Where to find it: If Tubi is available in your region, it’s able to be watched there. If you’re not able to view it, send me a message and I’ll give you an alternate link.

What is it, in summary?: An indie environmental thriller about a future where air pollution has reached an all time high. The AirZone Corporation has made a deal with the government to help combat the problem, but, soon, mysterious deaths start occurring around their facilities. Two investigators want to create an exposé around AirZone, dragging along an unsuspecting news station meteorologist and his journalist girlfriend into the midst. If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, this stars of the many classic actors. Also includes Alan Cummings.

What do you love about it?: Though the film stars big names, it’s indie to the core. It’s a low-budget production that wasn’t going to win any awards, but it’s entertaining for what it is!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I love the relationship between the meteorologist (Arnie) and his girlfriend (Ellie). They work at the same television studio and have a nice companionship going on. Due to circumstances outside of his control (but related to AirZone), he has a lot of demons he now has to face, and Ellie stands by him through it all.

I’d love fluff or angst fic that focuses on them as a couple, for example, Ellie taking care of Arnie, each talking out their emotions together (maybe Ellie is feeling neglected since AirZone is taking over their lives), trying to have a date night despite all the drama going on. But I’d be glad to get virtually any fic about this film as long as it features Ellie and Arnie in some way.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: No. The whole film has to be watched.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): None.

The Stranger (BBV Series)

[personal profile] commanderbayban 2023-09-17 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: The Stranger (BBV Series)

Media: Series of six short films: 1. Summoned by Shadows, 2. More Than a Messiah, 3. In Memory Alone, 4. The Terror Game, 5. Breach of the Peace, 6. Eye of the Beholder

Approx length: Length of film ranges from 30 minutes (first installment) to 85 minutes (sixth installment).

Where to find it: Send me a message for links.

What is it, in summary?: An independent sci-fi series modeled after Doctor Who (and featuring many actors from the series), where an unnamed “Stranger” and his companion, Miss Brown (who is really just his support handler), travel around and try to make sense of the world(s) around them.

The Stranger was once a revered soldier working for his planet, but the enemy team swept him into a reformation program to kick the habit of being belligerent. The first three films feature him going through the program with his handler, while the last three bring two of his compatriots, Egan and Saul, into the midst. They’re against the reformation and want to bring him home so he can become a soldier again. The Wikipedia page explains it well.

What do you love about it?: I’ll admit that the series can be confusing and each installment usually takes more than one watch-through to get some semblance of understanding, but the films are entertaining nonetheless. Though it’s modeled after Doctor Who, The Stranger can be watched without knowledge of the original inspiration as there are no DW characters or references inside. It’s a standalone piece of media.

It’s a low-budget film, and even though it’s a sci-fi, financial limitations made it so it’s a very character-driven story. There are no Star Trek-level effects here.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I love the relationships between all of the characters. The first film, for instance, features a romance between a deaf boy and his girlfriend which is sweet, and I love the (platonic) relationship between the Stranger and Miss Brown that spans the first three films. The Stranger is a brood of a character while Miss Brown is a young professional type. Their different personalities play off each other well.

For films four through six, I love the back-and-forth between the “good side” and the “bad side”, although each side thinks they’re good and the other is bad. I’d request either something shippy or something platonic and sci-fi in theme, but I’d be appreciative to get any fic about this series.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Again, for the relationship between the Stranger and Miss Brown, one can watch any film from installments 1-3 (although I’d recommend 2 or 3). For the grittier storyline involving both factions, one would have to start with film four (if one started with film five or six, they would be confused).

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Sci-fi-typical violence in films 4-6. It’s mild, however; nothing obscene.
