Title: Yamaguchi Akira's pseudo-Edo SF art

Media: Artworks

Approx length: ...up to about 2 meters?

Where to find it: https://mizuma-art.co.jp/artists/yamaguchi-akira/

What is it, in summary?: A group of paintings with a similar style (the specific ones I've nominated are 東京圖(仮)部分 [Section of the Painting of Tokyo], 島尽鐡道圖 [Painting of the Island Lengthwise Railway], and 九州鐡道驛中驛外圖 [Painting in and around a Station on the Kyushu Railway]), all combining Edo-period aesthetics with modern and/or futuristic technology.

What do you love about it?: They're beautiful! They're also funny and wildly imaginative and just suggest a whole world spreading out that interests me.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Worldbuilding--give me a slice of life in this world!

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Pretty much any of the pictures in the same style works.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Not that I know of.

Approx length: Under two minutes!

Where to find it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2rD36QwGcQ There are a few associated pictures from the photoshoot that goes along with this, but the video is really the main part of the campaign.

What is it, in summary?: An advertisement for perfume that features three beautiful young people in an idyllic home. They water the garden, dance, have conversations we can't hear, relish in the luxury of fur and fine fabrics, and collapse in laughter.

What do you love about it?: Listen, these are three extremely attractive people, but also we have absolutely no idea what their relationships are. A triad? A couple with a hanger-on? A love triangle? Just friends? Friends with more? Is this their house or did they break in to play happy families together?

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Honestly, probably a lot of open-ended prompts like I wrote above! I think this is a fun opportunity for vibes-based storytelling with a lot of room for interpretation.

Title: Chambers (2019 TV series)

Media: TV Series! (Netflix, specifically)

Approx length: 10 episodes, approximately 45-50 minutes each.

Where to find it: Netflix link: https://www.netflix.com/title/80210361

What is it, in summary?: A single season series about a teenage girl who suffers a heart attack at seventeen, manages to receive a transplant via what is heavily implied to be some kind of divine(?) intervention, and proceeds to have creepy visions from the girl whose heart she now has.

What do you love about it?: It's well done creepy suspense/horror with interesting characters and dynamics. Sasha is the main character, an Indigenous girl (and that fact is important) who receives the heart transplant from a white girl named Becky, whose parents slowly, over the course of the series, attempt to essentially use her as a replacement for their daughter. There's more to it than that and it's more complicated, but it's significant. In particular, I like the friendship between Sasha and Becky's living twin brother, Elliot, who she bonds with in fairly significant ways and manages to inherit Becky's twin connection with him. There are a few plot threads left dangling at the end of the series, but it's mostly self-contained and it's well-written.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Mostly things focusing on Sasha's experiences throughout and after the series, as well as her relationships with Elliot, her best friend Yvonne and her boyfriend TJ. (If I had a fifth character slot, I'd have included her uncle, Frank.)

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfill your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: The first three or four episodes cover the basics of most of the relationship dynamics fairly well, as well as establishing the mechanics of how the heart transplant affects Sasha.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Hoo, boy. The most significant ones are suicide (including a depiction) and possession. Also on the list are drug addiction (heroin, specifically, including needle use), violence (including on-screen murder), cults, self-harm (heavy warning for ep6 on that front), forced drug use, mentions of sexual assault and torture and then implications of parental neglect and abuse. There's also a character who exhibits symptoms of dementia, though it is not actually.

Not your typical reincarnation story

Title: Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story

Media: Webtoon/Korean Novel

Approx length: ongoing Webtoon, at around 35ish episodes. Although the novel is finished.

Where to find it: officially licenced by Webtoons.com

What is it, in summary?: Your typical Korean woman transmigrates as the villainess of a novel she loved reading. But while she's happy to live the spoiled life of a rich woman, the author of the novel will not allow her to deviate from the plot. She does everything she can to avoid her death.

What do you love about it?: It is both the typical otome isekai plot, and it isn't. The main character, Edith, overcomes significant difficulties with the limited agency she's given by the author. She really does earn her happy ending!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: It turns out that the characters are puppeted by the author, and that they gain agency as Edith changes the story - the author's hold on the plot decreases - so I would love introspective pieces, or even an AU where Edith runs away with someone other than the love interest. Anything goes really.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: This one is difficult...For a quick "who's who" I would actually recommend the novelupdates spoiler thread, there is a good and detailed summary there.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): domestic violence, child abuse, threats of sexual assault, murder attempts, typical violence for the genre.

Media

Approx length
Nineteen 30minute episodes

Where to find it:
Amazon, free with ads in a few places (Freevee, tubi).

What is it, in summary?
Follows Marshall Teller after he moves to a new town (the titular Eerie, Indiana) and becomes convinced that it is the center of weirdness for the entire planet. He and his best friend, Simon, investigate said weirdness.

What do you love about it?
Honestly, so many things. It stands the test of time, which is always excellent. The characters, even the background and/or one-ep characters, are all really interesting and fun to think about. The plot lines and how the town is developed leave a lot of room open for fandom to play with.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?
Case fic is a big one for me. I love the ensemble nature of the show and I love more of that in fic. I also have a few ships, of course, but my favorite thing is further exploration of Eerie's weirdness.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?
For the characters I nominated, they're all from single episodes:
Melanie Monroe & Devon Wilde - Heart on a Chain (episode 7)
Sara Bob - Who's Who (episode 9)
Janet Donner - The Lost Hour (episode 10)

It's a pretty quick watch to go through the whole thing, though.

Content warnings:

What is it, in summary?
After a dimensional leak between two alternate Eerie, Indianas, Mitchell Taylor's hometown gets a little weird. Now he and his best friend, Stanley, investigate the weirdness that leaked through from the original Eerie.

What do you love about it?
The more I watch this one, the more I like it. It definitely suffers from trying too hard to be the original, but it has great characters and a lot of potential that's fun to play with in fic.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?
Ensemble fic, fic that focuses on background/one-ep characters.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?
Of the characters I nominated, Mitchell & Stanley are the main characters. Carrie is Mitchell's sister, a good ep for getting a feel for her is Perfect (episode 10), and Rodney is from The Goody Two-Shoes People (episode 2).

Content warnings
None that I can think of.

Approx length: 1 hour 25 minutes

Where to find it: Here on Vimeo (where the company themselves uploaded it) (see trailer, if you want)

What is it, in summary?: The Fugitive meets hacking, with a strong female lead

What do you love about it?: The "I was framed so I'm going on the run to prove my innocence" plot, and Missy Peregrym, plus Rabbit's a hilarious character

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I'm not, this year (though in previous years I've longed to see realistic aftermath of everything that happened) - I'm hoping someone else requests it so I can treat them. XD

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Nope, just watch the entire thing through (it's not even 90 minutes total!) and you're set.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Some violence for sure - you see a few people killed, and some of it's through close contact. Otherwise, nope.

Cinderella Phenomenon

[personal profile] stellarcadia 2023-10-09 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)

Title: Cinderella Phenomenon (Visual Novel)

Media: PC video game (visual novel)

Approx length: 15-25 hours to fully complete the game, 6-9 hours to complete a single route.

Where to find it: The game can be downloaded for free on Steam and itch.io.

What is it, in summary?: Cinderella Phenomenon is a romance visual novel about Lucette, the crown princess of the fantasy kingdom of Angielle. Lucette is bitter and cruel: she is still grieving the loss of her mother, who died during the Great War, a conflict between fairies and witches; and she resents both her father and her new stepfamily. Things come to a head when one of Lucette's dolls comes to life and reveals herself to be the witch Delora, who inflicts upon Lucette the Fairytale Curse (a name for unique curses based on fairy tales, Cinderella in Lucette's case): every non-cursed person in the world forgets who she is, and the only way to break the curse is for her to do three unselfish good deeds. But Lucette won't be forced to go at it alone: she's helped along the way by Delora herself; Parfait, a fairy who owns the Marchen, a safe haven for Fairytale Curse sufferers; and by the potential love interests, who also have their own Fairytale Curses to handle.

More info:
VNDB
TV Tropes

What do you love about it?: The game does a really good job at making early-game Lucette both unlikeable and sympathetic--so that you're rooting for her to become a better person. While she becomes much less abrasive as the story goes on, it doesn't whittle down her edges completely; she remains blunt and honest, but much less self-serving.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: While I love the main cast too, I'm most interested in works about Delora and Parfait (both separately and as /).

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: You can ignore the fandisc/sequel (I haven't had the opportunity to play it yet). Note that two of the routes (Fritz and Waltz) in the main game can only be played after you've completed two of the initially unlocked routes (Rod, Rumpel, Karma).

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): On-screen violence and blood. One of the love interests is the protagonist's stepbrother (they're close in age, their parents only married a few months before the beginning of the story, and also they start off hating each other's guts). Implied rape in a character's backstory.

What is it, in summary?:
The most famous myth about the founding of Rome

What do you love about it?:
I love history so ancient that it becomes indistinguishable from legends. It adds a certain charm to it and provides a fertile ground for creator's imagination to fill the gaps with unique ideas.
I love the concept of old gods meddling with the lives of the mortals. And Mars is one of the coolest (or rather the hottest) guys in the pantheon.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Even though Mars plays a crucial role in the story, he is only mentioned in the myth. There are only Rhea's words to rely on. I would love to read a tale in which the God of War is physically present in the lives of the boys and their mother. It can be a secret from the outsiders, it can be a disguise, but I wish to see Mars interacting with his feral kids.

鹿鼎記 | The Duke of Mount Deer (Hong Kong 1984)

[personal profile] gothic_gray 2023-10-10 10:23 am (UTC)(link)

Title: 鹿鼎記 | The Duke of Mount Deer

Media:: A historical/wuxia comedy-drama series, made in Hong Kong in 1984, and starring a very young Tony Leung and Andy Lau.

Approx length: 40 episodes, ~28 hours

Where to find it?: For an English-subbed version, message me or check the past letters in my journal. :) There are also box sets on eBay, and if you don't need English, TVB sometimes has it available on YouTube or their website.

Summary: In brief, the premise is that two boys meet one day on the grounds of the palace court at Beijing, circa 1650 or so, and become wrestling buddies. Both of them are hiding their real identities. One is actually the young emperor of China, while the other is a mischievous trickster kid who grew up in a brothel and is now being used as a spy... by rebels who want to overthrow the empire.

The series is an adaptation of Jin Yong's final novel, which is a wuxia anti-epic that subverts a lot of the traditional tropes of the genre. Much like the novel, the show is irreverent and comical and chaotic, but along the way it also explores some serious themes, building out from a sort of prince-and-the-pauper setup where a kid from the lowest level of society gets thrown straight into the highest possible social sphere.

Last year I wrote up a fandom promo for this series (on [community profile] c_ent), so check there for more babbling, gifs, etc. :D

What I love about it: I love the continual back-and-forth pull of affection and conflict between the trickster kid (Wai Siu-Bou) and the Emperor, and how they both keep trying to sustain the fiction of an equal friendship despite the massive power imbalance between them. I love the moments of trust and distrust, loyalty and betrayal, the identity porn, and the (both physical and metaphorical) sparring. Their whole relationship arc is just beautifully fraught. If you can suspend your disbelief a bit and ignore the low-budget sets and bad wigs and sexism, it's a great show, and an absolute disaster OTP that has delightful subtext and deserves so much more of a fandom. <3

What I'll be requesting: I'll be requesting the two main characters (Wai Siu-Bou and the Emperor), and would seriously love to read just about anything about them, separately or together, ranging from lighthearted slice-of-life about their friendship to darkfic that leans heavily into themes of power imbalance and manipulation. You can see some specific prompts in my Fic in a Box letter.

Are there sections of canon that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Yes! I'd be happy with stories focused on just the earlier episodes, if you'd like to check out the series but won't have time to watch all of it for Yuletide.

You can also check the section of my Fic in a Box letter labelled "Episodes to Watch" for a list of scenes with both characters in them. (Wai Siu-Bou is onscreen pretty much all the time for the whole series, but the Emperor usually only shows up for a few minutes per episode.)

Content warnings: Sexism, forced relationships/marriages (the protagonist collects a harem), strongly-implied rape. Some fantasy violence and death (nothing graphic).

老洞 | The Old Miao Myth

[personal profile] gothic_gray 2023-10-10 10:28 am (UTC)(link)

Title: 老洞 | The Old Miao Myth

Media:: A supernatural mystery/horror/suspense series set in 1930s Shanghai, made in Hong Kong in 1984 and starring Andy Lau, Ray Lui, and Patricia Chong.

Approx length: 20 episodes, ~14 hours

Where to find it: For an English-subbed version, message me or check the past letters in my journal. :) If you don’t need English, TVB sometimes has it available on YouTube or their website.

Summary: The plot centers around a mysterious idol/statuette, 老洞 (“Old Cave”), which is said to bring wealth and protection to whoever guards and worships it... but may also destroy your entire family if you don’t. When the story starts, the Tse family has had the statue for nearly 20 years and is the richest family dynasty in Shanghai, but other people are beginning to find out where the statue is, and scheming to get hold of it. Meanwhile, there’s also a perpetually-shifting lovers/friends/enemies triangle going on between the youngest son of the Tse family (Tse Seung-Cho, who's been entrusted with protecting the statue), his mysterious new best friend (Jin Bong, who is secretly scheming to steal the statue), and their mutual love-interest Yan Sou-Sam. All of them get caught up in a lot of tragedy and are never really sure who they can trust.

I recently wrote up a fandom promo for this series (on [community profile] c_ent), so check there for more babbling, screencaps, etc. :D

What I love about it: I love the horror vibes and all the trauma the characters go through, as well as all the relationship drama and conflict among the main three characters — particularly the two guys, whose rather ill-advised friendship starts up around the same time deaths occur in each of their families, each caused by someone in the opposite family. We get some triad-brotherhood vibes, shifting power dynamics, drunken confessions, trust and betrayal, continual but mostly pretty understated angst, and also everyone living in fear for their lives all the damn time. The show admittedly has problems; it's very dated and low-budget and full of ethnic stereotyping, and parts of the plot make no sense at all. But I like three main characters a lot. <3

What I'll be requesting: I'll be requesting Tse Seung-Cho and Jin Bong, and would love to read just about anything about them, together or separately (or with Yan Sou-Sam, or just about anyone else at all from the series). I'd be especially into hurt/comfort, heavy angst, or outright darkfic for this fandom. You can see some specific prompts in my Fic in a Box letter.

Are there sections of canon that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Yes! I'd be happy with stories focused on any part of the series starting from the first episode, so you could definitely watch just the first few episodes and write about those, if you don’t have time to watch the whole series.

Content warnings: Nothing graphic, but LOTS of death, including child death and suicide. There’s also a brief attempted rape (by random criminals on the street). And the plot hinges significantly on the premise of non-Han cultures having witchcraft or dark magic.

What is it, in summary?: (TOM's other hand comes up and with both his hands he brings her hand to his lips.)
LAURA (Smiles tenderly at this gesture, and after a moment)
Years from now . . . when you talk about this . . . and you will . . . be kind.

It's a very tender play about homophobic bullying and toxic masculinity in the mid-century, and how one survives that with support and love. It touches sensitive topics such as age gap relationships, repressed homosexuality, and horrible bullying with such care and tenderness. It takes play at a school in New England in the 1950s, and it centers around Tom, a boy who starts to be bullied for not being "manly," enough, and the understanding, kind house mistress who begins to feel trapped by how little she can help.

The movie is very good and well-acted (stars the original cast from the play) but read the play first, as the movie is effected by some 1950s film censorship.

What do you love about it?:

It's so -- it's about this young man, Tom Lee, who is soft, and sweet, and likes music, and has long hair, and is in love with the headmaster's wife, and he doesn't fit in with the other boys. And because he doesn't fit in, they're threatened by him. They start to mock him cruelly, awfully, and it's -- it's something that holds up so painfully well. Tom is not queer as in into men (alas) but it's a story that really showcases toxic masculinity.

It's a story about how the pressure of being a man eats you up and chews you out and crushes you. And how you turn on anyone who isn't man enough, because if you turn on them, then no one will notice the way you fail, no one will notice the ways you don't fit into the tribe --

And it's also about the love between Tom and the house master's wife, how they connect on a soul-deep way, on a level no one else in the play does. It's about how she alone understands this boy's soul, this agonizing almost romance, this deep connection built on shaky ground. It's about how she says "Manliness is not all swagger and swearing and mountain climbing. Manliness is also tenderness, gentleness, and consideration." It's about how there's such understanding, such empathy in this play -- it is so deeply, firmly kind.

It is aching and painful and one of the most beautiful things I've ever read.

I just love how empathetic it is -- how lovingly it showcases its characters. It has love for everyone in this show, from Tom and his non-traditional masculinity, for Laura and how she feels a kinship to Tom in part because of her dead husband his age, for Mr. Reynolds and his own repressed queerness that he expresses by lashing out. I love how it still holds up astonishingly well today -- how what it has to say about toxic masculinity still is sadly relevant. I love what good writing it has -- look at this description!

(She looks at him a moment. He is to her a heartbreaking sight . . . all dressed up as though he were going to a prom, but instead he's going to Ellie . . . the innocence and the desperation touch her deeply . . . and this shows in her face as she circles behind him to the door.)

Or this bit that says so much about Tom!

https://pureanonofficial.tumblr.com/post/728030662357073920/tea-and-sympathy-1956

It is possibly the most impactful play I have read in a while; I read it a little more than two months, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. It makes me unhinged.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I am absolutely fascinated by the strange, almost-romance of Laura and Tom. What starts out as just a school boy crush on his end (TOM shuts the door He is deeply in love with this woman, though he knows nothing can come of it. It is a sort of delayed puppy love. It is very touching and very intense. They are easy with each other, casual, though he is always trying in thinly veiled ways to tell her he loves her.) turns into something deeper and more real throughout the events of the play. It's based on the author's own experience with falling in love with an older woman in school, and it shows in how kindly he writes it. They have such a genuine, true connection, and it's just deliciously problematic enough to be intriguing and aching. They connect on music, poetry, art! They're the only ones who appreciate the finer things at this school -- but it's partially her connection to him that makes him an object of scorn. The house mistress is only supposed to offer "a little tea and sympathy," not truly care about the boys, and her connection to him hastens the problems in her marriage. They are lovely and painful and wonderful and --

I want to read about them post-canon. I think the play ends at such an intriguing point, and I can so easily see them meeting later. I can so easily picture them picking up years later, older and wiser, and maybe then --?

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Nope!

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Homophobic bullying and slurs. A main character attempts suicide but does not succeed.

Scrooge (A Chrismas Carol) - 1951
Released as ‘Scrooge’ in Great Britain and ‘A Christmas Carol’ in the U.S.

Media
Movie

Approx length
Approximately an hour and a half

Where to find it
I was startled to find this is actually a bit tricky to find via legal streaming, although hypothetically easy to find in other ways. You can easily buy the DVDs via online retailers. I’m also happy to help point people in the right direction — you can DM me here or send me an ask on Tumblr, at quicktimeeventfull.

What is it, in summary?
A beloved and critically acclaimed adaptation of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. This particular version expands upon the events that led Scrooge towards becoming the terrified, stingy man he is today.

What do you love about it?

So: this is, obviously, a story about Christmas. However! More than that it’s a story about a man in the twilight of his life who has become so embittered by the events of his past that he clings to money like a talisman & refuses to spend a cent of it to bring anyone — including himself — the slightest bit if comfort. Franky I think it’s realistic.

I am, also, deeply obsessed with the relationship between Scrooge and his former business partner, Jacob Marley. No two ways about it — I think they are in love. They are two very cold, money-obsessed people who find each other and ruin each other’s lives by enabling their worst qualities. After Marley dies, Scrooge moves into his house and sleeps in his deathbed; he leaves his plaque on the door of their office and even answers to his name. For his part, Marley claws himself back from the grave to give Scrooge one last chance at genuine happiness. Anyway!! I think they’re great, and genuinely very moving.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?
Scrooge and Marley, romantic or otherwise — I think they have an incredibly fascinating relationship and I think about it all year round.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?
The whole thing must be viewed.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence)
Childhood neglect. A character dies in childbirth and this occurs onscreen. There is some extremely dated language.

Hobson's Choice (1954)

[personal profile] beatrice_otter 2023-10-12 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Maggie Hobson winking at Will Mossop

Title: Hobson's Choice

Media: British movie, released 1954

Approx length: 1 hr 48 minutes

Where to find it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7RgwJ9htag

What is it, in summary?: Hobson's Choice is a comedy about a determined woman outsmarting her alcoholic, misogynist father so she and her sisters can marry and have the lives they want.

Maggie calmly pours tea as her father is shocked that she's going after what she wants.

The father is the titular main character, but the daughter gets more screen time and it's her actions and choices that drive the main plot of the movie more than her father. He sets things in motion at the beginning, and then spends the rest of the movie having to react to the things his daughter does.

The Hobson family own a boot shop in late-19th-Century Britain, a very well-respected shop, but the father doesn't have much to do with it. His workers in the basement make the boots, and his daughter Maggie (the eldest, plainest, and most practical) runs the shop part of the business, while her father spends most of his days in the pub. There are two younger daughters, both of an age to get married, both fashionable and pretty (and snobbish), and they do the housekeeping and cooking and such while courting two local men. Hobson, who is a bully, declares that he won't give his daughters "settlements" (i.e. the dowry that a respectable girl from a family like theirs would be expected to have), and without that money it'll be very hard (if not impossible) to get husbands. But that won't matter to Maggie, whom he's decided conveniently is an old maid who will spend her whole life working for him for free.

Maggie has other plans. She has her eye on Will Mossop, her father's best bootmaker. Will is a shy, gentle man who is incredibly good at making high-class shoes. He's been bullied and dismissed his whole life, but Maggie can see what a good person he is.

Maggie admires Will's hands.

She tells him they're going to marry, and honestly she doesn't give him much choice in the beginning; but he's happy, and one of the things she consistently does is help him so that by the end of the movie he's self-confident and capable of standing up for himself.

What do you love about it?: It's funny, it's sweet, it's about how stupid snobbishness and class-sensibility is, and everything from the acting to the directing to the cinematography to the music to the editing is very well done. (Also, it's one of the few cases of my knowledge where a female adult is played by a woman much older than the character--the actress was 45, the character's age is given as 30 several times.)

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I'd love to see more about Will and Maggie caring and growing. I'd love to see what their life together is like and how they manage Maggie's father now that they're living in the same household and Will's running the shop. I'd love something pre-canon about how Will caught Maggie's eye, or about how Will comes to love Maggie during the course of the movie. Or something about their day-to-day life in their little basement shop, or something 20 years in the future to see where they end up.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Charles Laughton playing a misogynistic, classist bully for laughs.

Approx length: 48 minutes

Where to find it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdH2Sy-BlNE

What is it, in summary?: Janelle Monaé's lush sci-fi ode to queerness, sexuality, and rebellion. In the near future, people are called "computers" and any who are different are "cleaned" by having their memories removed. Janelle plays Jane 57821, a "dirty computer" who has been captured and is being "cleaned." The songs are the memories the cleaners are trying to erase, of her experiences in the queer subculture and her polyamorous relationship with her girlfriend and boyfriend.

What do you love about it?: The music is amazing, Janelle has a great voice and writes great songs. The message is also great, the story is engaging despite being disjointed and not having any actual dialog. The acting is good and the visuals are lush and engaging.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Worldbuilding! I would love to know more about all the details that we see in the story. I'd love to see the memories explored more, and I would also love to see something about Jane, Zen, and Ché post-story.

Betsy-Tacy kid lit series by Maud Hart Lovelace

(Anonymous) 2023-10-13 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Love Anne of Green Gables, and looking for a Yuletide replacement with the books no longer eligible? Meet the Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace.

Anne similarities: Betsy is a reader with a fertile imagination who wants to be a writer from a young age. The series follows her from age 5 to married life during World War 1, and is filled with gorgeous nature descriptions of small town Minnesota, warm family life, and close friends. (And a few dashes of romance!)

The books are based on the author's life, and you can visit real life Deep Valley (Mankato, MN) and walk through Betsy and Tacy’s houses, lovingly restored, and visit the houses, parks, and locations also mentioned in the books. Including her beloved Carnegie library, which is now an art museum! Visit Betsy-Tacy-society.tumblr.com for pictures and fandom fun.

Why it’s awesome: The series grows with Betsy, with childlike writing in the early books, and YA writing in the later. It’s very easy to jump in with the high school books, or even just read the two standalone related novels, like Emily of Deep Valley (relating to Syrian immigration, depression, and the feeling of being left behind. I read it every time I need to remember how to muster my wits).

I like that all of the characters have ambitions that are taken seriously. Betsy was always going to be a writer, to her family’s pride. Joe was always going to support her ambitions, and they were always going to push each other to greatness. Tib dates around and supports herself. Tacy always knows herself and does everything on her own schedule.

I also love that in Emily, we learn more about the adults of the world, like Miss Sparrow the town librarian. These books are set 1900-1917 and written in the 40s, but show all the many different ways to live happy and fulfilling lives for women. Marriage is only sometimes a part of it, and never all of it.

(Looking for slash? Nothing is canon, but Tacy has read to many as gay or demisexual, Tib can read as having chaotic bi energy, Miss Sparrow is a happy, older single woman, and Betsy/Tacy is not an uncommon request. At least one request will be thrilled with femslash.)

Nominated characters: Betsy, Tacy, Tib, Miss Sparrow

Where I can find it: It’s still in print! Your local library, your local bookstore, Kindle, Overdrive/Libby, and Hoopla.

FANDOM NAME: Remember WENN

MEDIA: TV show

Approximate length: 57 episodes, about 20 minutes each, over 4 seasons

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Did you know that AMC ran original programming before Mad Men? It did! WENN aired back in 1996-1998, with four short seasons and a cliffhanger. It's a screwball comedy/drama set in a radio station between 1939 and 1941, written by Rupert Holmes (if you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain, you may like his sense of humor). It's like a historical version of Slings & Arrows, in many ways.

There's the small town girl new to the big city (Pittsburgh) who is the new writer, the Broadway diva now starring in 80% of the station's shows, her flirty husband, a man of 1000 voices character actor, a showgirl organist with a heart of gold and a lot of fond sexy memories of Errol Flynn, a Foley artist who never speaks, a smooth talking con artist running the station, and so much more. Every episode took place inside the studio (lobby, Studio A, green room, writer's room) and used it to great effect.

If you’re a Broadway fan, Carolee Carmelo and Amanda Naughton star as showgirl organist Maple and head writer Betty.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?
Streaming on AMC+, via app or Amazon Prime. First 7 days free!

WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE?
Linda’s WENN site has episode summaries, song lyrics, cast and character information, photos and pretty much anything else you could want. http://www.rememberwenn.org/

NOMINATED CHARACTERS: Betty, Maple, Hilary, Scott

WHAT AM I LIKELY TO REQUEST?
Shenanigans! Old time radio mishaps. Life in the 40s in the Barbazon Hotel for Women. Being snowed in at the station for Christmas (an event once referred to). Scott/Hilary, Scott/Maple, maybe even some Scott/Betty. I multiship, ha. (Scott and Maple show up in season 2.)

What is it, in summary?: “The ride is set in the year 1938 as guests enter the Amazon River Base of the colonial business, the Jungle Navigation Company. The boathouse's radio broadcasts AWOL Airwaves, the service of one Albert Awol who plays music and relays announcements. Within the boathouse are several allusions to the corruption and negligence of the Jungle Navigation Company including a board of lost boats, an escaped orangutans, crates of damaged cargo, attempts to sell a feral tiger, and the employee of the month dying of disease.” Guests board boats with skippers, who have a loose script with dad jokes and bad puns, and the freedom to add more.

What do you love about it?: I adore the 30s setting, with all of the great props. And the humor! It’s so goofy and silly, and I love the bizarre stories that are hinted at with the interludes, queue sets, and props.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Albert (radio host), Alberta (new owner, taking things in a modern direction) and Worldbuilding are nominated. I’d love to see these lost explorers/skippers fleshed out, with holiday shenanigans and goofy humor.

Title: Solstice

Media: Visual novel (for PC)

Approx length: 4½ hours for the main story according to How Long to Beat, 7½ hours for main + side stories.

Where to find it: On Steam. There's also a shop on the official site.
A few Let's Plays are available on YouTube.

What is it, in summary? A mystery story in a dystopian/fantasy setting where a group of characters spend the entire winter in a city inside a dome in the middle of a frozen wasteland. There are two main characters and you play as both: Yani (the girl in the first picture) and Galen (the guy on the left in the second picture).

Each main character has their own optional love interest, and they're men in both cases, so F/M for Yani and M/M for Galen. They can also become friends with each other and work together.

There are a lot of choices that will unlock multiple endings. In the same ending, the fate of the characters can also be different depending on other minor choices (for example, a character can survive as single, with their love interest, etc.)

Every character is morally gray in some way. They also all have secrets that you have to find out.

What do you love about it? First of all, the art is stunning! I also love the diverse group of characters and the way they feel real when it comes to their motivations and the way they act in general. They're also all adults with different ages and backgrounds, just the way I like. I love that Galen and Kasiya are gay no matter what you choose to do about their relationship. There are also great female characters and interesting platonic interactions.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it? Galen/Kasiya. I'm not picky, as long as they have a happy ending. There are a lot of missing moments and things we don't know, and I'd just love more! I welcome romance and smut, but I'd also be happy with a more gen character study that explores them and their friendships with other characters as well, especially Yani and Yakone.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships? Since this is a mystery and I'm requesting a main character, you should play the main story until the end at least once. Although this is the kind of visual novel where it's highly encouraged to play different routes as well, you don't have to if you want to write for me. Suggestion: after your first play, use CTRL to skip fast the dialogue you already saw; this way you'll be able to see different routes without replaying the entire game. If you have time and you like the story, I'd recommend to do it!

Galen/Kasiya romance is really easy and intuitive to get, so don't worry! Honestly, as long as you don't explicitly pick the options where Galen says he's not interested, they'll be into each other. Just follow your instinct and it'll be fine! I just have one suggestion if you're planning to play the game just once: when you have to choose the potential murderer with Yani, don't choose Galen. As much as that route is interesting for other characters, there is a plot twist about Kasiya that is not revealed if Galen is in jail. Since it's an important part of the character and I'm going to request prompts about it, I recommend to pick someone else at least once.

Content warnings: Characters unsympathetic about mental health issues, hallucinations, self-harm, suicide, (optional) main character getting high on magical drugs.

The Vast of Night (2019)

[personal profile] ninety6tears 2023-10-14 08:40 am (UTC)(link)

THE VAST OF NIGHT is an indie science fiction movie that takes place in a small New Mexico town in the 1950s. On a night when seemingly most of the town is at the high school basketball game, teenage friends Fay and Everett, one an inquisitive switchboard operator and the other an ambitious radio jockey, get drawn into investigating a strange audio signal. The film uses limited scope to craft a classic straightforward UFO mystery, paying some obvious homage to The Twilight Zone in a couple moments but also distancing itself from retro camp with a haunting tone all its own.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: The story doesn't rely on action or even much conflict, just the strength of the lead performances and a non-idealized sense of place and time. Fay and Everett are two characters we only get to know through the real-time pacing of an evening, but the slice-of-life moments spent with them and the curiosity they naturally share makes them quickly endearing and familiar.

POTENTIAL REQUESTS: I will be requesting Fay and Everett as a ship or a friendship, likely with some classic genre tropes thrown in as prompts.

What is it, in summary?: These are a series of album covers that, when you view (https://dirtyriver.tumblr.com/post/179425086144/mike-royers-covers-for-the-cruisin-series-pt-1) them (https://dirtyriver.tumblr.com/post/179425114864/mike-royers-covers-for-the-cruisin-series-pt-2) together, tell the story of two high school sweethearts named Eddie and Peggy. The covers, like the samplers they're attached to, span the years from 1955 to 1970. Read sequentially, we follow them from their somewhat carefree adolescence all the way to an unsatisfying marriage, with lots of stops in between. Eddie's interest in the beatnik lifestyle and eventual enlistment, followed by the Vietnam War itself, causes them to drift apart and back together over time. The album series also tells the story of Luthor, a folk musician and leader of Luthor and the Lids, who hits it big and then sells out, and Genevieve, Eddie's post-college girlfriend.

What do you love about it?: There's so much room for building a universe here! It's the 1950s and the 1960s, and it's very plugged into the cultural zeitgeist of each extremely tumultuous year. There are missing moments and scenes and post-1970 things that could be explored!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Gen, but also thinking Eddie/Peggy and Eddie/Luthor.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: You can stop at a single album cover if need be.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Implied offscreen minor character death; police brutality on one cover (that is not looked upon in a positive light); implied drug and alcohol use.

What is it, in summary?:
Jellyfish was a short-lived power-pop band founded by childhood friends Andy Sturmer and Roger Joseph Manning Jr., who met in high school in San Francisco and bonded over their musical passions. Andy was a mercurial drummer and Roger was a soft-spoken pianist, but they were similarly ambitious about making it as musicians.

After moving to LA for college, in the late 80s they fell into the city's music scene, playing in different groups together, and eventually realizing that only the two of them playing together without any outside influences could satisfy their creative desires. They formed Jellyfish, which went completely against the grain of the musical trends of the time—hair metal, post-punk, grunge—to play shiny, orchestrated power-pop music inspired by the Beatles, Queen, XTC, and ELO.

They recorded two albums, the latter of which (Spilt Milk) was an absolute masterpiece but was torturous to create, with nearly a year spent in the studio, as Andy and Roger took an unsustainable perfectionist approach to their elaborate sound. Touring also took a toll on Andy in particular, who didn't enjoy life on the road. By all accounts their label did a poor job of marketing them, and they lost out on many important opportunities. Factions emerged within the band, with the other members frustrated that they had no chance to contribute meaningfully to the records, which contributed to the rotating cast of players.

By the time the second album was released and it was time to write a third, the band had lost momentum. Roger and Andy, who had been friends since they were teenagers in the 70s, broke up the band over a phone call in 1994—and then they never spoke to each other again. Ever. No, really. Never. They're both alive and well, but there's no chance of a Jellyfish reunion ever happening, because of how decisive the band's collapse was.

What do you love about it?:
The first thing I fell in love with was Jellyfish's music—catchy, incredibly arranged, lyrically fascinating, intricate and immersive. Then I watched videos of their performances and was absolutely blown away by their visual aesthetic, Andy's stand-up drumming ability, and the sheer virtuosic musical talent on display.

The story of the band drew me in after that—why had they put out only 2 records and then seemingly disappeared? Why did they never get back together despite a cult following building up over the next 20 years? That led to learning about the story of the band's permanent dissolution, which is of course total catnip. The way a relationship can burn so brightly for a little while and bring so much beauty in the world, only for it to go out with a whimper.

The heart and soul of the band is the relationship between Andy and Roger. They were the founders, the songwriters, the two consistent members across a changing lineup, and in the end when they couldn't go on, the band was over. The finality of the ending to such an incredibly fruitful creative partnership is, to me, what makes it so moving.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
I just want Andy/Roger fic to exist! Here are some inspirational tidbits...

The development of their relationship from high school onwards:

“I’ve never seen anyone of his age with that expertise and command of his instrument,” Manning says of Sturmer. “Andy was one of the first kids in our town who took it seriously and had a goal. He was my hero.”

Andy's difficult temperament:

[Falkner:] "He’s just a difficult guy. There were days when he wouldn’t even look at me. Roger and he didn’t really have an easier relationship. Roger came up to me a couple of times, almost in tears, and said: 'Screw this, it’s too hard.'"

In the music video for "New Mistake," they portray an angel and a demon looking down on Earth from above:

Also, just Roger's ethereal beauty in general:

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
The albums are great and full of amazing narratives in and of themselves, but as I'll be requesting band member RPF you will want to familiarize yourself with their story through what's available online or—if you're super interested—ordering the book.

What is it, in summary?: A commercial in which two warrior women fight, but stop to apply some pain reliever, then vow to go back to killing one another.

What do you love about it?:The femmeslash potential for it it absolutely off the charts (rubdowns with pain relievers, anyone?), but you can also go with worldbuilding here. Are they fighting for the favor of the Greek or Roman Gods? What's lead them to this moment? Why do they hate each other? Are battles to the death common in their world?

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Femmeslash or gen, perhaps some light worldbuilding.

Title: Fall in Love Alone - Stacey Ryan (Music Video)

Media: music video

Approx length: 3 minutes, 41 seconds

Where to find it: YouTube

What is it, in summary?: The music video tells a story of two childhood acquaintances (a boy and a girl), who become friends, and later fall out of touch. Years later, the boy, all grown up, is working for a ride share and picks up his friend one day. They reconnect, fall in love, have kids--but then you learn that part's just a fantasy.

What do you love about it?: It's a cute little story, and I love that so much of the character's lives are framed around time in the car. Being driven somewhere or driving somewhere is such an integral part of our lives (well, mostly in the US and Canada), and I think that concept is super cute.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I want to know more about these two kids! At the beginning of the video, the girl's mom thanks the boy's mom for driving her to school, and she's taller than he is. Was he resentful? Were they besties beyond carpooling? What happened when they were in high school that drove them apart? Will one of them tell their hypothetical kids about how they met while on a ride to school? I'd like to see a fluffy first love story, and I'd really love to see them have a happy ending.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Everything's right there in the video, TBH

What is it, in summary?: from the Amazon page: Best friends and unofficial brothers since they were six, ninth-graders T.C. and Augie have got the world figured out. But that all changes when both friends fall in love for the first time. Enter Ale. She's pretty, sassy, and on her way to Harvard. T.C. falls hard, but Ale is playing hard to get. Meanwhile, Augie realizes that he's got a crush on a boy. It's not so clear to him, but to his family and friends, it's totally obvious! Told in alternating perspectives, this is the hilarious and touching story of their most excellent year, where these three friends discover love, themselves, and how a little magic and Mary Poppins can go a long way.

OR: it's about first love, baseball, and Mary Poppins, not necessarily in that order.

What do you love about it?: I first read this book the year it came out, in 2009, and it was like a warm blanket. The characters are lovable and persnickety in their own way (TC's family are devoted Red Sox fans; Augie is very into classic Hollywood; Ale is an aspiring dancer who comes from a family of diplomats). The adults in the story are just as vibrant and likable as the kids. It's largely epistolary, and quietly funny and charming.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I want to know how TC, Ale, and Augie are doing now. I also would really love some fic about what it was like for them when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 (the book takes place a year earlier)! I also think it'd be adorable to see TC and Hucky (the 6 year old that TC ends up befriending).

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Sadly, no.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): parental death (TC's mom passed when he was in elementary school and her death is mentioned)
